Hi everyone! Welcome to our youtube channel. On this episode of Highlight My Town, Dan Edson and Highlight My Town visit the Peculiar Winery in Peculiar, Missouri. Dan Edson:
Did you know have our very own winery right here in Peculiar, Missouri? Today, we're going to tell you all about the Peculiar Winery on Highlight My Town.

Welcome! I'm Dan Edson with EXP Realty. I'm here with Chris Gough, the owner of Peculiar Winery. How are you?

Chris Gough:
Good. Nice to meet you, Dan.

Dan Edson:
Glad to be here at Peculiar Winery. Tell us how it all got started. I know it's a family-owned business.

Chris Gough:
Yeah, man. Well, I went from professional wrestling to television to wine. So it's been like an obvious step-by-step process to get here. I planned it that way. But seriously though, my parents and my wife got into this. A few years ago, I had a different career and I had a buddy that had a winery that had been successful for about a decade. He asked me, he goes, "Hey, I want some more friends of mine in the wine business. Do you want to come up and [inaudible 00:01:24] with me?" I said, "Sure because I want to get out of my industry anyway."

Chris Gough:
So I went up there and started learning about that. And while I'm learning how to make wine, my parents, they were retired, my dad is always looking for something to do. And I was like, "Hey, how about we do this?" And at first they thought I was crazy, but after a while, they came around, and so here we are.

Dan Edson:
So a lot of stuff goes on here during the weekends. You guys have food trucks and you have live entertainment. Tell us about that.

Chris Gough:
Well, I tell people, when I used to go to wineries with my wife and my parents, I enjoyed the wine and stuff, but really what we liked is the whole experience, the atmosphere. That's what we liked about it. I mean, I go to these wineries, that's all a lot of good wine, but none of them really stand out. But I just remember how much fun we had there.

Chris Gough:
So we try to make it a festival atmosphere on weekends. Friday and Saturday nights, we have food trucks that come and we have a nice variety of food. We didn't get into the restaurant business here. We have snacks and stuff, meat, cheese, crackers, dips, stuff like that. But for meals, the food trucks really worked out and people around this community don't really necessarily have a ton of, let's say, ethnic food here. There's a lot of barbecue guys that do a great job too. Jiggy Pig is a local guy here that we use a lot. But there's a lot of people that would just come through, like Greek, Mexican, Italian, just the whole laundry list. People really like that.

Chris Gough:
And then bands, we do a lot of local music here. There's a ton of classic rock and country, but we like try to variety it up with jazz, blues, zydeco, a lot of different stuff out here to give people different things to do in the on the weekend.

Dan Edson:
So tell us about the beautiful property here. You guys have 15 acres, am I right?

Chris Gough:
Yeah. We were looking for land and in Peculiar we found this spot here. We thought it was great because they had just paved Harper Road back here, and of course they had just made the new exit, because it's basically the high school over there, Peculiar Way. And it's 15 acres here they were splitting up. So we got the 15 acres. At one point we were going to maybe put some vines in here and we still may, but we get our juices and grapes from other suppliers around Missouri and other states at this point. It's just been a really great location because it's country enough, but still easily accessible to the highway.

Dan Edson:
Great. And you mentioned that you guys are in the process of developing greenhouse patio-covered seating.

Chris Gough:
Sure. Yeah. So our patio is pretty big. It was a focal point last year, definitely during COVID. People wanted to go out there, sit outside, they were very comfortable in an outdoor setting. So we decided that we wanted to cover that for multiple reasons. Number one, I can have more heated seating in the winter, but it's going to be a lot of garage doors out there, typical of a bar in the inner city or somewhere where you're going to have a lot of air flow through there, and cooled in the summer, heated in the winter. And you can have bands in there if it rains. You can have more events out there in case of weather. So yeah, I'm looking forward to that.

Dan Edson:
Sounds like a win-win.

Chris Gough:
Yeah, totally. And I hope, what enjoys it this year. We hope to have that finished probably by the end of May.

Hi everyone! Welcome to our youtube channel. On this episode of Highlight My Town, Dan Edson and Highlight My Town visit Peculiar Games and Hobbies in Peculiar, Missouri. Are you looking for a Kansas City games store? This games store is a must visit in the Kansas City metro area!

Recently, we had the opportunity to highlight Peculiar Games and Hobbies on Highlight My Town. This shop is truly a must visit If you've been hunting for a board game store Kansas City.

I'm Dan Edson with EXP Realty and founder of Highlight My Town. Our mission is to support the small businesses in our community. Recently, we visited Peculiar Games and Hobbies and spoke with the owners, Kim and Pat.

Dan Edson:
Welcome to Highlight My Town. We are at Peculiar Games and Hobbies, and I'm here with the owners, Kim and Pat. Good to meet you guys. This is a really unique business here at Peculiar. Tell us a little bit about what you guys do here.

Pat Roberts:
Well, we sell all kinds of board games, card games, dice games.

Pat Roberts:
Miniature games. Anything that is going to bring you around a table. Mostly not electronic. There's a few that have some electronic components, but it's about sitting across the table from somebody and enjoying time together. That's our main focus.

Dan Edson:
Very cool. And so how long have you guys been in business?

Kim Roberts:
Four and a half years.

Dan Edson:
Four and a half years. And so people can come here and play games in your game room and make new friends.

Kim Roberts:
We have a shelf full of games that are available for anybody to borrow anytime we're open, and play in the other room. We have different activities every night of the week. Once things start opening up again, people bring in games to share and play, or they'll just play what we have on the shelf.

Dan Edson:
Great. Wow. So we're inside the game room here, this is kind of the heart of the operation. People come here and play games. What are some of your most popular games that people come and play?

Pat Roberts:
Probably the two most popular games right now, and really most times, is Warhammer 40,000, and Magic The Gathering. Both of those have been around for 30 plus years, have a large following. They're even normal culture now, so non-gamers are kind of aware of them as well.

Dan Edson:
So this is a unique business. I don't know of any shops around here that do this. So people come from all over to play games here, would you say?

Kim Roberts:
For tournaments, as far as Joplin, but on a regular basis, Lee's Summit clear down to Archie.

Dan Edson:
What draws customers in to Peculiar Games and Hobbies?

Pat Roberts:
Oh, I think a lot of it is the atmosphere we provide. We have rules. You can't talk about politics or any of the things that cause animosity these days. You come in here and you have fun.

Dan Edson:
[crosstalk 00:02:40] you enjoy yourself. And I'm sure you have a lot of people that make friends and it's a community, a family atmosphere.

Pat Roberts:
It is definitely like a family atmosphere.

Dan Edson:
So here at the store, you guys have games for all ages, am I right?

Kim Roberts:
Correct. We have games for 18 months on up. Everything from simple little... Well, the kids' games, some of them are educational, some are just fun. Most of them are both. We have stuff for little simple games like UNO, clear up to games that are going to take you several hours to play.

Dan Edson:
So what are your hours, for someone who's interested in playing?

Kim Roberts:
We are here Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from noon until 8. On Friday and Saturday, we stay open until 10, and we are closed every Wednesday.

Dan Edson:
Peculiar Games and Hobbies is located...

Kim Roberts:
We are in the Pizza Hut building right next to Sonic, off 49.

Dan Edson:

Kim Roberts:

Barkville Bakery Peculiar, Missouri | Highlight My Town | Kansas City Dog Treats | The Treat Waggin

Hi everyone! Welcome to Peculiar, Missouri, On this episode of Highlight My Town Peculiar, Missouri, Dan Edson and Highlight My Town visit Barkville Bakery.

Welcome to Highlight My Town. We had a great time at Barkville Bakery in Peculiar, Missouri. It was super fun meeting the owner Kayla Swatzell and her two dogs, Tank, and Cooper. We witnessed firsthand how they make their popular, fresh, handmade dog treats that are made from Kansas City ingredients.

Barkville Bakery partners with local farms, and when possible, they try to get their ingredients from the local Peculiar Farmers Market and from one of the owners friends who owns a local farm. “So anytime I can, when it’s in season, I grab the sweet potatoes, I grab their pumpkins, their carrots, all that kind of stuff. So it comes straight from here in Peculiar and goes straight into the dog treats.” Kayla says.

Are you looking for a place that specializes in making birthday cakes or cupcakes for dogs? Look no further then Barkville bakery! It all started with the pupcakes that come in two different sizes, the mini and the standard cupcake. The pupcakes were inspired by the owner Kayla’s dog Tank. They can also do five-inch round cakes, bone-shaped cakes, paw-shaped cakes, and then they can even do custom cakes. If you can imagine it, Kayla says she will find a way to make that cake for you! The owners dogs Tank and Cooper are both taste testers. “I kind of joke sometimes that he’s quality control, and I have my chief taste testing officer in Cooper because he’s a little pickier, but they both love the birthday cakes.” Kayla says.

Barkville Bakery operates the one and only “food truck for dogs” in Kansas City, which is really neat! “I’ve always wanted to own a food truck, and so when I started this, I was like, “Okay, how can I mix food truck with what I’m already doing with the bakery?” So I was just kind of Googling around and I saw that they had one in Chicago, they had one in Seattle, and they actually used to have one in Kansas City, But it quit being around about three or four years ago, they just kind of fell off the face of the earth. And so we were like, “All right, this is cool, let’s do this.” My husband’s a mechanic, so he helped me kind of pick out a truck and we did all the work from the ground up. I sell my treats as well as other local items, so we’ve got the bows from Cheeky Chic Bows and stuff that you’ll see around the store also on the truck.” Kayla says.

The Treat Waggin’ food truck for dogs does events all over Kansas City. They can do events such as dog birthdays, dog rescue events, dog park openings, car shows, and more! They even have some contracts with different dog parks in the area, so you just may spot them set up at a dog park some Saturday morning or a Sunday afternoon. The food truck is a big hit with the dogs! “One of the kind of fun things that they do is usually the dogs get to take a photo inside the Treat Waggin’. I let them sit on the step or I’ll put them up in the window, so they actually look like they’re serving.” Kayla said.

Barkville Bakery also offers bulk dog treats in their store. Customers can mix and match the flavors that their dogs really like. They sell these treats by the pound, so if you come in, you can grab a bag, you can grab the scoop and fill it up with whatever flavors they have. They rotate these flavors in and out for different times, and they even bring in seasonal treats, focusing on pumpkin in the fall. Just fill the glass jars that they have, then bring a reusable container like that back, then they will actually give you a cheaper per-pound rate. The peanut butter treats are always a hit, there’s rarely ever a dog that will refuse the peanut butter treats, according to Kayla.

You Matter Belton is committed to bringing our community together, to connect with, and reminding our youth of their importance, and that they do MATTER. You Matter Ray-Pec serves the students of the Raymore-Peculiar School District and Ray-Pec Schools. You Matter Belton serves the students of Belton School District#124 and Belton, MO schools.

Downtown Kansas City is just a 30 minute drive from this lovely town. Peculiar is a city that is experiencing rapid growth, including new construction, and local small businesses growth.
